Tengrinews.kz — Kazakhstan has purchased the Gardasil 9 vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV). It protects against nine types of HPV that cause cervical cancer and other types of oncological diseases.
How many doses of the HPV vaccine were purchased
According to information provided to the editorial office by SK-Pharmacy LLP, the single distributor purchased 249,952 doses of the American Gardasil 9 vaccine, which protects against human papillomavirus, for 2026.
“The first batch — 155,589 doses — arrived in Kazakhstan in June 2026. In accordance with schedules approved by health departments, 92,959 doses have already been shipped to the regions. Delivery of the remaining part of the first batch is planned for August,” SK-Pharmacy explained.
The second batch — 94,000 doses — is expected in October. Its distribution across the regions is planned for November.
Which HPV vaccine Kazakhstan purchased earlier
Kazakhstan began vaccination against human papillomavirus in September 2024. It is included in the National Preventive Vaccination Schedule. Vaccination is voluntary: it is carried out only with the permission of the parents or legal representatives of girls.
Initially, the Ministry of Healthcare purchased the Gardasil 4 vaccine, which protects against four types of HPV.
The National Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Healthcare told us that initially, the Gardasil 4 vaccine was available to:
- girls aged 11 as part of routine vaccination;
girls aged 12–13 as part of catch-up immunization.
Since May 2026, vaccination has also become available to girls aged 14–17, inclusive.
How many girls received the HPV vaccine
According to the National Center, as of early July 2026, 482,000 HPV vaccinations had been administered in Kazakhstan:
- 265,000 first doses to girls aged 11–13, or 38.1 percent of those eligible to receive it;
- 175,000 second doses to girls aged 11–13, or 25.2 percent;
- 42,000 first doses to girls aged 14–17.
The press service said that the current remaining stock of the quadrivalent Gardasil 4 vaccine stands at 126,000 doses.
“Use of the Gardasil 9 vaccine for immunizing the population will begin after the existing remaining stock of Gardasil 4 has been fully used. This will ensure the rational use of purchased vaccines and the continuity of immunization,” the editorial office was told.
The National Center added that Gardasil 9 will be available free of charge to girls aged 11 for routine vaccination and to girls aged 12–13 for catch-up vaccination. They will need to receive two doses.
No final decision has yet been made on whether the vaccine will be available to teenagers aged 14 and older.
