Tengrinews.kz — Five people hospitalized in St. Petersburg on suspicion of mpox have tested positive for the infection, according to RIA Novosti.
According to the report, the patients are currently in stable condition and continue to receive treatment at one of the city’s hospitals. The infection is mild to moderate in severity.
“Rospotrebnadzor said it is monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to identify possible cases of infection. The agency noted that Russia has a sufficient supply of test systems for detecting mpox, including its new variants,” the report said.
It became known on October 17 that five people in St. Petersburg had been hospitalized on suspicion of mpox. Specialists launched an epidemiological investigation and are determining who the patients had been in contact with.
It was also reported that on October 15, five people in Moscow Region who had been in contact with a patient suspected of having mpox were hospitalized as a precaution. The regional Healthcare Ministry said they had no symptoms and their condition was assessed as satisfactory. All of them were tested and placed under medical observation.
Following reports from Russia, Kazakhstan’s Healthcare Ministry said it does not rule out the possibility of the infection being imported into the country, but the risk of widespread transmission among the population remains low.
